TwoFold is a cyanotype camera that opens to photogram and closes to photograph, allowing for twice the amount of exposure opportunities. To facilitate photographing, TwoFold’s angle can be adjusted by tightening and loosening the side knob and sliding to the desired position, while the telescoping lens allows for fine focus adjustments. TwoFold can easily enter its open state to photogram by unlatching its clasps and raising the photogramming base using the outside slider. The cyanotyping paper can then be fastened using magnets. The collapsing sleeve at the back provides a convenient, secure spot to store the cyanotyped images. By taking advantage of traditional cyanotype techniques and mechanical movements, Twofold exists as an entirely analog camera – paying homage to historical photograph and development methods.
TwoFold was designed and fabricated for the first half of 4.031 Design Studio: Objects and Interaction, taught by Marcelo Coelho. I co-developed TwoFold with Sophia Letch (Wellesley BS '27) – my contribution being the mechanical design, user interaction, CAD, and fabrication of the camera. For now, view our project overview here, and check back later for more details about my contribution and design process!
